We live in a world that focuses on the superstars … on the attractive people, the successful people, those who happen to be the flavour of the month … while the rest of us tend to be ignored.

Now hopefully, we don’t crave recognition – live your life that way and you’ll find yourself dancing to the tunes of others. But neither is it nice to be ignored. Others get all the limelight, yet no one seems to see you – your abilities, your sacrifices, your contributions.

There’s an interesting character in the New Testament whom most of us have never heard of, and yet … he’s there.

1 Corinthians 1:1 Greetings from Paul. I was chosen to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. God chose me because that is what he wanted. Greetings also from Sosthenes, our brother in Christ.

Who in the blazes is Sosthenes? Well, according to Acts 18:17, he was the head of the synagogue in Corinth, who was beaten by an angry mob before the Roman governor. That’s all that we know of him. And yet, here he is (after that horrendous experience) on the road with the Apostle Paul, one of the Bible’s A-listers.

But just because we don’t know much about him, just because ‘Sosthenes’ isn’t exactly a household name, do you imagine that God didn’t know him –  that God didn’t see what he suffered, what he contributed and that he’s not in the Lord’s Presence right at this moment reaping his reward?

No, we’re not all superstars in the world’s eyes. We were never meant to be. But that doesn’t matter a toss to Jesus.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
