Download audio fileYou know what I’ve noticed? Whenever God calls me to do something, the timing always seems bad. It never seems convenient – in fact, quite the opposite. And under those circumstances, the great temptation is to make excuses, rational and plausible though they might be.
Some people, entrepreneurs in particular, are natural risk takers. Others, quite simply, are not. Wherever you lie on that risk–taking continuum I have something serious to share with you today. If you have your heart set on following Jesus, you can leave behind any notion that you’ll be able to stay in your comfort zone.
The disciples were in a small boat in the middle of a storm on the Sea of Galilee. In fact, the storm became so ferocious that even the experienced fishermen amongst them were afraid of drowning.
Jesus came walking across the water – they were even more afraid, because they thought they’d seen a ghost. But Peter, the risk-taker, the entrepreneur, called out to Jesus:
Matthew 14:28,29 Peter said, “Lord, if that is really you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus said, “Come, Peter.”
What? Is he completely nuts? There’s a storm going on here Pete. You know these waters. You know what can happen.
Lord, if that’s really you, tell me to come to you on the water. Really??!! And Jesus said, “Come, Peter.”
Now you’d think that Jesus could have calmed the storm first – but no – He called Peter out of the boat, right in the middle of that raging storm. Think about it. No ifs, no buts, no maybes … no excuses about this not being the right time. Pete stepped out of the boat in the middle of the storm.
If you have your heart set on following Jesus, you can leave behind any notion that you’ll be able to stay in your comfort zone.
